New NVidia 3D Vision Video Player

If you use your NVidia 3D Vision setup to watch movies, then go get the latest version they just published.  It adds support for several new formats and abilities:

  • Added support for MXF files of Digital Cinema Packages.
  • Added JPEG2000 video decoder.
  • Added timing correction for field-sequential content. The new timing option compensates the sync offset of 1/50 or 1/60 second between the left and right field by doubling the frame rate and delaying one eye by one frame.
  • Added m2ts file extension in open dialog.
  • Added support for 3D Vision Surround mode
  • Added frame-sequential input layout.

They’ve also updated their Quicktime sources, and fixed several glitches  related to fullscreen, playlists, and other issues.

The Core Unleashes Lego World Cup Fury

Lego was a project to show off The Core’s full range of capabilities as a creative production studio. Impressive modeling, well-executed animation and gorgeous renders set to an over-the-top audio score are perfectly in tune with the fun and excitement that was experienced during the World Cup.

“We want our clients and potential clients to experience quality 3D character animation that’s fun and playful, but also professional – a direct reflection of our attitude as The Core,” says Chad Feeback, Executive Producer/Partner.

For Creative Director/Director Chris Hoffman, the concept was inspired by his childhood in Zimbabwe where Legos were among his favorite toys – and soccer was a popular pastime. “The Lego figure is a worldwide phenomenon enjoyed by many people in many countries, and so is the sport of soccer. I felt that the Lego was the perfect character for this World Cup piece.”

It took the small team of artists over two weeks of pulling late nights and weekends to complete the spot. Hoffman credits the artists for investing their time and passion into the project, which was a labor of love – and one that everyone was proud to be a part of.

Hoffman concludes, “We hope audiences will feel the personal touch of this spot. It tells the story of how the underdog prevails through pure determination and heart. This was an opportunity to show how The Core, a well-respected and growing boutique studio, is capable of doing the A-level work that clients expect from larger companies.”

Okino ships its 14th Yearly Release of PolyTrans-for-3ds-Max & Maya

Toronto, Ontario – April 27th 2010 — Okino Computer Graphics, a leading provider and pioneer of data translation solutions to the DCC/Animation and professional production markets, announced today that its long standing 3D DCC/Animation/Skinning and CAD/MCAD/Architectural conversion software PolyTrans-for-3ds-Max (for 3ds Max 2011 & 3ds Max Design 2011), and PolyTrans-for-Maya (for Maya 2011), are now fully qualified and shipping to customers.

PolyTrans-for-3ds-Max and PolyTrans-for-Maya are two of the most complex technologies developed and deeply integrated into 3ds Max and Maya, having been developed daily by Okino for well over 15 years under the constant use and testing from tens of thousands of the world’s best known companies, from ILM to Disney to Boeing to BMW and almost every top named company, as broken out here: http://www.okino.com/conv/users.htm. This is extremely stable and well refined conversion software. While few initially know of, or believe, that one program exists which does all of these conversions, we have spent 22 years developing the industry standard conversion system for both 3ds Max and Maya that does everything from bidirectional Max/Maya conversions, ideal CAD import from ProE/SolidWorks/CATIA/Inventor/etc, guaranteed animation + skinning conversions, and much more. These are statements of functionality and robustness personally made by the development team at Okino, not a marketing person, and only come about from having this software used in mission critical production pipelines for decades. That is the comforting aspect of using Okino software, knowing that the software has been made stable long ago in real production environments.”

Autodesk 3dsMax Turns 20!

That’s right folks, AutoDesk’s 3ds Max was unleashed upon the world as 3d Studio DOS a whopping 20 years ago today, bringing affordable 3D modeling, rendering, and animation to PC’s worldwide. The software has since been used to help create Oscar-winning movies, record-setting video games and Emmy-winning television content. Notable entertainment projects include movies “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button” and “The Hurt Locker”; video games “The Sims” “World of Warcraft” and “Halo”; and television content from the Dancing Baby featured on “Ally McBeal” to Oceanic flight 815′s crash onto the island in “Lost” and the Emmy award-winning opening sequences of Super Bowls XXXIII and XXXVI.

The software has also been used by architects, engineers and designers to help visualize designs before they are built, enabling them to make more informed decisions, communicate the story behind their designs and win more business. Some high-profile projects visualized with 3ds Max are One World Trade Center, the Dallas Cowboys stadium and the Las Vegas Sands Macau Hotel and Casino.

“It is incredible to see how far computer graphics have come over the last two decades and thrilling to think of what will be possible in another 20 years,” said Marc Petit, Autodesk senior vice president, Media & Entertainment. “Today 3ds Max — used with our other Digital Entertainment Creation and design tools — is helping hundreds of thousands of 3D artists unleash their creativity and work more productively. Our development teams will continue to look to the future, so that what is not possible today may be possible soon.

”Autodesk will continue its 3ds Max anniversary celebrations at the SIGGRAPH computer graphics and technology conference in Los Angeles. On each day of the show, Autodesk will give 3ds Max anniversary T-shirts to attendees wearing old 3ds Max apparel. On Wednesday, July 28, from 5-6 p.m. local time at the Autodesk booth (South Hall, #500), top 3ds Max artists from various industries will share their expertise in a special 3ds Max Anniversary Tips & Tricks Extravaganza. New 3DConnection Driver for 3d s Max

“Our innovative intelligent 3D navigation feature provides a new level of control over the point of interest in 3D designs” said Dieter Neujahr, president of 3Dconnexion.  “By automatically establishing and displaying the optimal center of rotation, designers are free to focus more on the creative elements of their designs without having to think about navigating or positioning their model.”

To meet a range of design needs, there are two modes of setting the center of rotation. The new Auto Rotation Center sets the center of rotation to a point on the model that is nearest to the display screen center, which is particularly useful for use at higher zoom levels. For additional control, designers can also easily pick a new center of rotation point on the 3D model to suit their individual design task.

In addition to intelligent 3D navigation, the latest driver update also streamlines the 3Dconnexion 3D mouse user interface within 3ds Max. By using the Menu or Panel button on the 3D mouse, a pop-up menu is activated to centralize all 3D mouse related options into one location.  The new pop-up menu simplifies the interface by grouping functions and hiding details the designer may not be interested in. The new menu also minimizes screen clutter and provides designers with a clearer view of their design.

Selection Tool: Used for selecting and moving a shape. It can also be used to resize a shape.
Direct Selection Tool: Selects a single anchor point instead of the whole shape. Used for editing anchor point of a shape. Click once on a point to select and hold Shift to select multiple anchor points.

Shape Tools

Now we will move on to the Shape Tools. When you go to the Tool Palette and hold the Rectangle Tool, a list of shape tools will expand out for you to pick. We will start with the default Rectangle Tool.

Getting Started in Illustrator

Create New Document

Go File>New Document to create your first document. Type in a Name for the document and click Advanced to select RGB for Color Mode as we will be working for the screen. Click Ok after that.

Illustrator Workspace

Below is the workspace and some common terms for calling it. If you are using the latest Adobe Illustrator CS3, you will notice to new design for Floating Palette. The rest looks about the same.

Saving AI Files

Let’s select the type and click on the artboard and type some text. After that go to File>Save. Select Adobe Illustrator(*.AI) for file type and name it “First Drawing”. Click Ok after that. Leave the rest of the settings at default. You have successfully save your first file. To make any more changes you can simply open the Adobe Illustrator file.

Floating Palette

This is the floating palette which contains properties for our shapes. It is commonly used for changing colors and stroke width.

Toolbox

This is the handy toolbox which we will use most often. By default, it comes in one single column as shown in the screenshot above. To switch it back to the old 2 columns toolbox, you can simply click the top left mini arrow to toggle it into 2 columns. Some of the tools like Rectangle have more tools hidden. To expand, just click and hold the icon to reveal all the similar tools under that group.
